Deep Breath

‘Deep Breath’ is an Iranian urban slacker movie that follows the meanderings and random vandalism of two listless and alienated twenty-somethings from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Kamran, a college student, and Mansour, a petty thief, are from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Cool and carefree, they steal cars, snatch cell phones, smoke joints and drive aimlessly. When the boys pick up a hitchhiker, a chatty student named Ayda, her dynamic presence begins to rouse them from their terminal ennui. Punctuated with beautiful imagery and comic moments, Shahbazi paints a sympathetic yet unsparing picture of disaffected Iranian youth. Wry and bittersweet, Deep Breath is not to be missed. The film was shown at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival to great success. Among other accolades it won a FIPRESCI award at Pusan and the Jury special award at Turin as well as the Best Film award at the Belgrade Author Festival.

Kamran, who lives a wealthy life and is among the top students of his university, feels depressed and hopeless and has trouble eating and sleeping. His close friend, Mansour is his only companion. Mansour also has a troubled life, his mother is confined to a nursing home, his sister has a life full of problems and the landlord won’t let him in anymore. Kamran and Mansour wander around the city during the day and spend the night at a cheap hostel somewhere and have no reason to keep on living. They steal a car and meet a girl in the street named Ayda, a joyous hopeful girl who is a university student and lives in a dorm. Ayda becomes the relief Mansour needed and makes him forget his troubles for a while, but Kamran’s depression and willingness to die still concern him a lot. At some point Kamran’s health problems get worse and he dies in hospital. Mansour, feeling desperate and Ayda, now dismissed from the dorm for his relationship with Mansour, come together and leave the town for North. Later on, we see their car, apparently crashed into a reservoir near the dam and drowning (a scene which is also shown during the beginning of the movie). In the final scene, they drive away on a foggy mountain road.

کامران که زندگی مرفهی دارد و به علاوه در رده ی دانشجویان ممتاز دانشکده است، اما اصلاً خوشحال و راضی نیست و دچار افسردگی و نامیدی مطلقی شده و خواب و خوراک ندارد.او به صمیمی ترین دوستش منصور پناه می برد که او نیز در زندگی اش درگیر مشکلات متعددی است.مادرش در آسایشگاه بستری است، خواهرش زندگی نابسامان و سرگردانی دارد و صاحبخانه نیز او را به خانه راه نمی دهد.کامران و منصور، روزها در خیابان سرگردانند و پرسه میزنند و شب ها را در مسافرخانه سر میکنند و برای ادامه ی زندگی هیچ انگیزه ای ندارند. کامران و منصور با ماشینی که سرقت کرده اند، در خیابان با دختری به نام آیدا آشنا می شوند. آیدا دختری پرشور و ظاهراً امیدوار به زندگی است، او که دانشجوست و در خوابگاه دانشجویی زندگی می کند، برای مدتی موجب می شود تا منصور ناراحتی و مشکلات زندگی اش را فراموش کند، اما انزوا، سکوت و اندوه کامران و گرایش او به مرگ، همچنان دغدغه منصور است، تا این که وضع جسمانی کامران دچار اختلال میشود و بالاخره در بیمارستان می میرد. منصور دچار نامیدی کامل می شود، آیدا به جهت اطلاع از رابطه اش با منصور از خوابگاه اخراج می شود. به پیشنهاد منصور با هم راهی شمال می شوند.در پایان به نظر می آید که ماشین آنها دچار تصادف شده و در سد غرق می شوند (این صحنه، در آغاز فیلم نیز نمایش داده شده است) ؛ امّا در آخرین نما، آنها با ماشین خود، در جاده مه گرفته کوهستانی دور می شوند.
